Speech Acts as Politics: The Contextualization and De-contextualization of Normativity

[ Abstract ]

This article seeks to show the intrinsic political character of speech acts with references to J. Habermas and R. Brandom's pragmatics and J. Butler's language theory. In his formal pragmatics, Habermas argues that while pragmatic norms are reconstructed from the use of language in our modern life-world, they have general and formal validity. Brandom distances himself from this Kantian norm theory and argues that language use norms depend on the accumulation of precedent language uses. With this common law model of normativity, he criticizes Dummet's conservatism in vocabulary extension through the latter's example of the word “bouche.” Brandom argues that the norms of our language develop in the “ongoing elusive process,” where norms conflict with each other and where these conflicts or fractions are “repaired” or harmonized. I apply this contextualist, antagonistic, historical conception of normativity to J. Butler's analysis of hate speech and show that her “resignification” is not only a linguistic strategy for some determined political goals, but also that every speech act is a “resignification,” meaning that such an act overwrites the norms of our language use and is always politically changing the normativity of our lifeworld.
