【授業科目の目的と概要】

This is a course where you get to decide what you want to learn about through organizing your own lectures. This course gives students the opportunity to plan a series of lectures together, as part of the “Japanese Studies in English Lecture Series” that the Faculty of Social Sciences has been organizing since 2016. The class will meet irregularly on Thursdays, and students will also be expected to attend the lectures that they organize. There will be no more than 14 course sessions in total.

For this course, students will first decide upon a theme for the 2017 Japanese Studies in English Lecture Series (the theme for 2016 was “Perspectives”). Students will be divided into groups, and each group will be in-charge of organizing one lecture. Organizing a lecture includes: deciding upon a speaker based on the theme, familiarizing oneself with the research of the speaker, contacting the speaker, setting a date for the talk, preparing publicity (flyers, etc) for the talk, preparing the venue for the talk on the day itself, writing a report about the lecture, etc.

As part of this course, students will

- Learn communication skills (written/spoken) to communicate with potential speakers for the lecture series
- Learn organization skills needed to organize a lecture
- Be involved in extensive group work to organize the lectures and prepare reports about the event
- Learn about issues related to Japanese society and culture through the lectures

【授業の内容・計画(回数・日付・テーマ等)】

This course will meet irregularly on Thursdays, third period. Students are also expected to attend the lectures that are organized as part of this course. The scheduling of these lectures is dependent upon the students.

Course materials will be decided upon after discussion with students. All course materials will be uploaded to Manaba.
